1. Personal Statement

Coming from China and having studied in the UK for my undergraduate degree, I have realized that every student has his/her own talents. This draws a big divide between cultures because in China, a male student like myself is consistently put off to study fashion related subjects. My parents who live in China are businessmen and have founded successful business ventures. All I have been taught throughout my life is how not to get into something that I truly love – the fashion industry. 

As a young man, I have always asked myself: “what makes a person successful?” The quintessential answer that anyone can give is to follow one’s heart and do what one loves. As an Asian, I feel the pressure to get good grades in school. Since my young age, I was duck-fed with facts that carry no meaningful value to me personally, but I have to commit into memory in preparation for exams, such as how the US President James K. Polk, who was in office from 1845, engaged in the Mexican War in a land grabbing exercise for his country; or how a translation of Boethius and a Treatise on the Astrolabe are prose works by an English poet named Chaucer who died in 1400s.

I believe that the added element of business studies mixed with fashion could make a very strong case for me to pursue what I like to study (fashion) and strike a good balance of my family’s expectation of me to become a businessman. Hence, I studied my undergraduate degree in Global Fashion Management and Marketing. To that end, I analyzed so many case studies related to fashion companies. In one project I had to perform business and marketing analysis on a brand called JW Anderson, I adopted the STP and PESTEL analytical framework in order to draw conclusions and successfully presented case to the class as a team.

I followed Karl Lagerfeld to the letter and tried to adopt his way of life in everything I do, imaging that I am his little Chinese protégé. He is the person who inspired me a lot in fashion industry. Not only was he so successful at Chanel, he also opened 7L, a bookstore on Rue de Lillein Paris, and published books on a wide range of subjects that interested him, including fashion, photography, literature, advertising, music, journalism, mythology, illustration, humour and architecture. For my diet and to keep my lean body shape, I even follow Lagerfeld’s best-selling book “Karl Lagerfeld’s Guide to Losing Weight”.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I did lose out on a lot of learning opportunities because live classes were suspended and classes replaced by Zoom. This has impacted me negatively in obtaining average exam results, limited by my English communication skills. Like many international students, I read and write better than I speak.

As a concluding remark, I hope to devote myself to the fashion industry in China as my future career path upon graduation. Within the current fashion market in China, a lot of new brands have emerged, and my dream would be to become a buyer at a large My undergraduate program is the first stage of fulfilling this goal; as Covid-19 restrictions come to an end, I truly hope that I can enjoy my own career once i graduated from university and open a buyer store that help people to find their correct style and confident. And also building a worldwide application to selling selected fashion item and several emerging Chinese brand.

4. Relevant coursework & work experience

4.1. coursework

For working in the fashion industry, here are several modules in university have to helped me thinking about what should I to do in desired field.

1) On module 338LON-Innovation and global entrepreneurship. A business idea have been established and developed very successfully. Through out business idea that helped building future career very targeted and detailed. This module actually built a business idea of opening a 24-hours auto clothing shop on CBD of first-tier city in China. I do really strong analyze by several framework, including PESTEL, SWOT, 7Ps etc. Have comprehensive understanding of current market environment is essential to create a business plan. For the plan, i have do lots of research about previous history of automatic store and vending machine. And then do lots of resources and relation to own aspiration and make it be possible action.

From this module, a business plan actually helped a lot to start thinking about future career, and find the right place to start career. Entrepreneurship is good ability to keep when start up own business. And also I have relation to my future career, online application for different types of fashion brand should been built, based on this module experience.

2) On module 220LON-Personal branding and promotion in international fashion. I have learned a lot about how to build a strong personal brand and promotion myself like a real brand. This module help me a lot to find the most attractive and passionate topic of myself. Always remember to do something you really interested in, that can make you into very different level. Building a personal website is essential for people working in the fashion industry. For example, Linkedln , Facebook, Instagram etc. Have provide opportunity for people to show their skill and personality. Thinking about what makes myself unique and special. I found i really enjoy do stylist for others and prefer collecting all different types of fashion items from different brand. That help me a lot to found what makes me happy in the fashion industry. 

From this module, building personal personality is really important and also show the strength of one people. To do personal promotion is important on workplace, because that can show people like a exhibition. Promotion on social media is good way to show personality to stranger easily. In addition, as internet become popular, promotion personal as a brand online can be part of career. Social media is one of the useful tool to create popularity and huge fan of a brand, finally bring benefit to enterprise. By establishing a social network of brand, can give customers a feeling of loyalty and trust (Srivastava, 2022). For future career, I really want to promotion my brand in different social media and post specific contents for target people.

3) On module 224LON-The London fashion project. This module actually helped a lot when doing team collaboration and some rules should follow when i going to workplace. I have worked on a team and our team called “Conscious Mind”. We organized a event and called “No gender No problem”. This project just trying to let the audience know no matter what is your gender, you can wear whatever you want and just feeling confident by yourself. We have to do a team chat every week, and make sure everyone response to their own part. I take responsibility to analyze the target audience by STP, develop the event target consumers by communication with team members. “Effective communication with team members would create same purpose altogether and reach the same goals. Talking with team members quite nicely and often can help team members develop a sense of belonging and strengthen relationships” (Stowell, 2009). Team collaboration is also important foe people working in the workplace, especially in big company. To make sure a company have complete system of team collaboration, everyone can use their own strength together, and lighting their works. Collaboration can linking different skills and characteristics become useful energy, and lead them walk together (Caldicott, 2013).

From this module, team communication is important when working with others. On workplace, always have team collaboration and share sources together. Be patient and kindness to each other. Find the value each other and also progress with colleagues. For future career, i will always collaborate with people who have same ambition with me and make good relationship with them. Teamwork with right people can half the work with double results.

4.2. Work experience

Have been through 2 internships during last two years, these two work experiences totally helped me a lot to find what I am passionate about and any possibilities about myself. The work experience literally helped me to find correct and suitable place I can competent for in the fashion industry.

The first one was a fashion consultant on local buyer store. Actually the store sell emerging fashion brand come from China and several other niche fashion brand. The main type of consumers would be people who have good and niche taste in the fashion industry . My major responsibilities have to:

1) Holding a fashion runway show, organize everything perfectly and communication with model, makeup artist, photographer, chief electrician. Mix everything together.Inviting previous consumers and potential consumers come here and have fun in the show. After show, payroll settlement for temporary employees. The last fashion runway show held an hotel, and the whole project was dark immersion. The show has to holding on dark environment and make customers felt immersiveness like in the night(See Appendix Figure1&2)

2) Do display for store. Have strong own store style and consider about decoration and design of store. Consider carefully about how to show product follow priority, and which product sell the best in the season. Last winter collection, mainly promotion boots and fur. (See Appendix Figure3)

3) Building long-time relationship with loyal consumers and proactive potential consumer research. Introduce the latest fashion product immediately to loyal consumer and building a special event for them to choose favorite items. Give loyalty consumers a invitation and special gift before special event, always show the respect and loyal to them.

4) Do stylist for different types of consumers. Finding the correct style for them and once they wear clothes make sure they can feeling comfortable and confident. Let the customer have a kind of personal collocation division feeling. Do recommendations to consumers about any possibilities style they can try. And also pushing accessories to them.

5) Observation of current fashion trends frequently, and trying to capture niche fashion trends to loyal consumers. Analyze the different types of fashion trends match different types of people. For different styles of people and different age of people. “Trends setting including modern activity, that including rigorous study of current trends, observation of the dynamics that involve the consumer, brand sand forecasting agency. This action is really important when analyze most business and and creative contents” (Carvalho & Montagna, 2020).

6) Attending fashion ordering fair, choose the latest fashion items from collaborate brand and reverse next season items from their look book. Do connection with designer and stylist, get inspiration about different looks and also inspirations to create different outfits. Last fashion ordering fair held on Shanghai, China. Lots of amazing pieces have been selected to store. (See Appendix Figure 4&5)

7) Make a fashion collage and campaign for product and collection. Line up same style clothes into one category. For different brand, make the display figure for one collection (See App Figure6) 

From this internship on local buyer store, that helped me a lot to develop my future career. I will have my own buyer store on local market. This store mainly sell designer brand worldwide and still have emerging Chinese fashion brand, collaborate with Chinese designer and holding a special event on the store. Collecting potential and loyalty consumers from local market by holding activity. And also promotion store online to different social media platform.

The second one was a fashion buyer on big application company in China. This company mainly sell second-hand or resell item to others including luxury and sports brand. This company is really big and emerging, based on Shanghai, China. The environment was really nice and have strong sense of fashion. (See Appendix Figure7&8) My major responsibilities have to:

1) Communication with brand PR in Chinese market, make sure always get the latest fashion items immediately. And also update about brand activities, discount etc.

2) Do lots of observation from current market. Not only from one particularly aspect of fashion, but also every sector of fashion industry. Going to flagship, department and collection store and see what people wear. Do street interview about current fashion 

3) Communication with foreign buyer and designer brand, have conversation about different fashion trends and analyze about consumers inner though. Different types of styles for different people, understand different requirements from different people.

4) Selecting the most popular items in the current trend, including luxury, sports, high-end etc. Have conversation with colleagues and do analyze about this topic. Consider the most popular color in the season.

From this internship on big application company, that helped me a lot to find what i am going to do in my future career. I will establish a application and website to sell different types of fashion brand and second-hand luxury product. Actually get inspiration from this internship about how to select brand and do authentication about second-hand luxury brand. This action can also be really sustainability and decreasing waste in the fashion industry.

5. Suitability to desired job through Myer Briggs

Have test on 16responsibilities and result was logistician ISTJ-A. (See Appendix Figure9&10)That shows 39% on extraverted and 61% on introverted. 45% intuitive and 55% observant. 53% thinking and 47% feeling. 67% judging and 33% prospecting. 63% assertive and 37% turbulent.

The observation from the test:

1) I am not outgoing and open people. Prefer have small community with closely people. Start a business with ambitious friends and communicate with them frequently。

2) I prefer do observation of everything rather than i just feeling about. That shows how rational I am. Consider the work more carefully, and be able to meet different customer groups in different ways.

3) Thinking are more important than feeling, that shows how intellect I am and always do things without emotion. Really strong personality with individual thinking and consciousness. Always put work first and never bring personal feelings to work.

4) Personal judging is important for me, really explore things from previous experiment. Do not focus on prospecting for something. Keep calm when face emergency.

5) Really strong self-identification, know what is exact right and what is wrong. Do not influence myself by others. Have own judgment, not by other people’s thoughts. We will also have our own judgment and consciousness when dealing with work. We need to speak with facts, and all of them need strong evidence.

For future career, I have clearly understanding about my personality, strength and weakness of my personality. It is quite easy to find correct place to develop my strong points, and avoid my weakness. 

6. Blog post exploring experience of the Career’s Fair

There are two events of career’s fair that i have already attended. One was “careers influencer marketing with keynote speakers”. Here were 3 speakers during the event.

6.1. Event1

Actually during whole event, I learn a lot about working in the fashion industry and what I am most passionate about for my future career. A screen shoot of attended this event(See Appendix Figure11). Every speakers talked about their personal experience in the fashion industry and how them overcome some issues. Motivation and engagement come a lot from these conversation. One point come from speaker: Tim Luo have encouraged me a lot. He said: “always be confident in the fashion industry, no matter where you are. Just do whatever you want, finally you will be successful” (Luo. T, Event speaking, March 12, 2022). Worked in the fashion industry, a strong mind is necessary and essential. Strong mind is always important for people who worked in the fashion industry, because fashion have been place people always judged about. Based on this event. I have strong do my own business and make it successful, even there are lots of challenges and stressful, overcome it and find the way to do right thing.

6.2. Event2

The other was “tomorrow i want to be…”. Here were 5peoples who worked in different fashion area. And i get lots of inspiration about different work responsibilities in the fashion industry. Here are different responsibilities of 5 different jobs:

1) Fashion journalist which worked with news about fashion everyday. Updates about emerging brand and market, current fashion trend etc. For daily routine, she need to collecting different types of resources from lots of different ways, and make sure it’s reality and effective. They also need to contact with department manager and introduce what have been found for each day and which information should been uploaded.

2) Director of out of the box recruitment have to unbox parcel every day and check the achievement of the action, open PR box from collaborate celebrity or brand. For daily routine, she need to check parcel box everyday and unboxing them immediately and take a video or photograph. Collaborate with different brand and help them to promoting their product on social media page.

3) Skincare buyer clerk have to do display of product everyday, and make sure update the different types of product on both famous and latest category. Give consumers latest information about skincareproduct. For daily routine, she have to organize every signal skincare item and remember different information about different skincare, including place of origin, ingredient, functional component and every detail about product. Communication with store manager and do decoration work for different products and events. 

4) Founder of Digital 360. the responsibilities will always check the latest application trends. IT skills is necessary for this job, because lots of technology should be upload on this application. For daily routine, she need to always test the application and make sure it’s available to use and safety to consumers. Upload new information on the entry page, give consumers a feeling of freshness. Update the visual regularly.

5) WGSN strategist have to thinking about how to show the web page to consumers and how to get more potential consumers from big market, that’s really interesting job. For daily routine, she need to communication with project manager and decided which should be upload into the web page. Contact with emerging authors and directors, make sure get enough resources and database when uploading new articles. Always be nice and friendly to audience and ask about feedback from them.

Overall. From this event,I learned a lot, all this information will engaged with:

1) Always be patient and enthusiasm with job and be 100% concern about with what should to do. Especially work in big company. Work hard is necessary and important to achieve success.

2) Start social network building about myself. Show lifestyle, personality and strength on social media, attractive fans and do business on here. Maximize personal value on social media.

3) Communication frequently with colleagues, boss and customers. These are essential factors for people to become better. Be kindness and friendly can give others good impression.

4) Always be kindness and nice to consumers, colleagues and boss. These people will helped a lot when doing business and the more you pay, the much will been achieved.
